Why Correct Air Conditioner Sizing Matters

Correct sizing ensures:

✔ Faster cooling
✔ Lower electricity bills
✔ Longer system lifespan
✔ Reduced humidity
✔ Quieter operation

An incorrectly sized system can lead to high power bills, poor cooling and unnecessary wear on the compressor.

Get a Professional Air Conditioner Assessment

While this guide provides a good estimate, the best way to ensure the correct air conditioner size is through a professional on-site assessment.

At JVK Electrical & Airconditioning, we assess:

  • Room size and layout
  • Insulation and sunlight exposure
  • Ceiling height
  • Airflow and installation location

This ensures you get the perfect split system air conditioner for your home.

Book a Split System Installation

If you’re looking to install a new split system air conditioner, our licensed technicians can help you choose the right system and install it properly the first time.

Why Choose a Split System Air Conditioner?

Split system air conditioners are one of the most popular and efficient cooling and heating options for Australian homes and businesses.

Step by Step How To Size Your Split System Airconditioner.

Step 1: Measure the Room Size

Start by measuring the length and width of the room in metres.

Formula

Room Area = Length × Width

Example:

  • Room length: 5m
  • Room width: 4m

Room area = 20m²

This number is the starting point for determining the required cooling capacity.

Step 2: Match the Room Size to the Air Conditioner Capacity

Split system air conditioners are rated in kilowatts (kW), which indicates how much cooling capacity the system can produce.

As a general guide:

Room SizeRecommended Aircon Size
Up to 10m²2.0 – 2.5 kW
10 – 20m²2.5 – 3.5 kW
20 – 30m²3.5 – 5.0 kW
30 – 40m²5.0 – 6.0 kW
40 – 60m²6.0 – 7.5 kW
60m²+7.5 – 9.5 kW

Example:

A 20m² bedroom will typically require a 2.5kW to 3.5kW split system.

Step 3: Consider Ceiling Height

Higher ceilings mean more air volume to cool.

Standard ceilings (2.4m) are used in most calculations. If your ceilings are higher than this, you may need to increase the system size.

Examples:

  • Standard ceilings: Use the normal sizing guide

High ceilings (2.7m+): Increase capacity by ~10–20%

Step 4: Factor in Sunlight and Insulation

Rooms exposed to direct sunlight require more cooling power.

Factors that increase cooling requirements include:

  • Large north or west facing windows
  • Poor insulation
  • Glass sliding doors
  • Dark roof spaces above the room

If your room receives strong afternoon sun, it may require a larger air conditioner capacity.

Step 5: Consider the Number of People in the Room

More people = more heat.

As a general rule:

  • Add around 0.15kW of cooling for each additional person regularly in the room.

Example:

A living room used by 4–5 people may need a larger system than the same sized bedroom.

Step 6: Heat Generating Appliances

Electronics and appliances produce heat which increases cooling demand.

Common heat sources include:

  • Televisions
  • Computers
  • Gaming systems
  • Kitchen appliances

Rooms like media rooms or home offices may need slightly larger systems.

Step 7: Open Plan vs Closed Rooms

Open plan areas often require larger air conditioners.

If your split system is cooling:

  • A kitchen + living room
  • A dining area + lounge

The system may need to be sized for the entire open space, not just one section.

Example Split System Sizing Calculation

Room details:

  • Size: 5m × 4m (20m²)
  • Ceiling height: 2.4m
  • Moderate sunlight
  • Two occupants

Recommended system size:

2.5kW – 3.5kW split system air conditioner

A 3.5kW system would typically provide comfortable cooling for this room.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Exceptional service and installation. I had an incredible experience with JVK Air Con from start to finish. After some past bad experiences with trades in my home - my faith in the service industry is now restored. Peter in customer service was fantastic. He was friendly, efficient, and genuinely helpful, and he managed to squeeze me in before the mythical Christmas deadline. He also offered a very competitive price compared to other quotes, which I really appreciated. Toby, the technician, was an absolute professional. He was punctual, incredibly knowledgeable, and explained everything clearly. He was also extremely respectful — something that unfortunately isn’t always a given — and made the whole process feel comfortable and easy. We removed and replaced the air conditioner smoothly and efficiently. The work was done with care, confidence, and zero stress. I’m beyond happy and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend JVK Air Con to anyone looking for reliable, honest, air con and electricial professional service. Thank you for such a positive experience!

I've had these guys do a few jobs at my house already, from aircon replacements to switch fittings, and they've been great every time. They provided a range of quotes and gave thorough advise on what was the best value. And for the requests that didn't work out (ie fitting dimmers on ceiling fans that turned out to not be ac dc compatible) they didnt charge lol. They're work has been good for a couple years now and I would trust them for any future jobs as well 👍
